Curriculum Refinement Workshops

We help educators use the process of Backwards Design to revise their current scope and sequence so they can make room for ADI investigations.

Curriculum Refinement Workshops

The integration of ADI into an existing science curriculum often requires educators to make substantial changes to what they teach and how they go about assessing student learning. In our Curriculum Refinement workshop, we help educators use the process of Backwards Design to revise their current scope and sequence so they can make room for ADI investigations. We also show teachers how to design three-dimensional assessments that make student thinking visible and how to write their own ADI investigations. This workshop is for educators who are familiar with ADI and are responsible for writing curriculum, creating instructional materials, and designing assessments for their district, school, or other organization. The table below outlines the elements of our one, two, and three day Curriculum Refinement workshops.

One-Day Curriculum Refinement

During a One-Day Curriculum Refinement workshop, participants will:

  • use the principles of backwards design to revise an existing science curriculum;
  • identify the ADI investigations they will embed into their curriculum;
  • create a curriculum map for a specific course;
  • peer review a curriculum map written for another course to ensure alignment; and
  • revise their own ADI investigation based on feedback from others

Two-Day Curriculum Refinement

During a Two-Day Curriculum Refinement workshop, participants will also:

  • learn about the benefits and limitations of different types of assessment;
  • identify multiple sources of evidence that can be used to make inferences about what students know and are able to do, and also point toward next steps in instruction;
  • create three-dimensional assessment tasks that will make student thinking visible;
  • peer review assessment tasks written by other teachers; and
  • revise their own assessment tasks based on feedback from others.

Three-Day Curriculum and Refinement

During a Three-Day Curriculum and Refinement workshop, participants will also:

  • learn how to create an ADI investigation;
  • create a ADI investigation;
  • learn the criteria we use to revise and improve an ADI investigation;
  • peer review an ADI investigation written by someone else; and
  • revise their own ADI investigation based on feedback from others.
